Official Rules

Applications for Change It 2008 will be accepted beginning on April 1st, 2008 at 10:01 a.m. eastern daylight time and ending May 12 at 11:59 p.m. eastern daylight time.

No purchase necessary for acceptance into the Change It program. A purchase does not improve your chances of acceptance. Open to legal residents of the fifty United States, the District of Columbia and Canada who will be between 18 and 24 years of age on July 16, 2008 and who will be enrolled as full- or part-time undergraduate college students in the fall of 2008. Void in Puerto Rico, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and where prohibited by law. Application into this program is also subject to acceptance of these Official Rules.

Sponsors: Seventh Generation and Greenpeace (together "Sponsors") are the Sponsors of Change It 2008 and are responsible for the collection and processing of entries and the overall administration of the program. Entrants should email Sponsors via the Change It website with any questions, comments or problems related to the program. Please allow 48 hours for a response.

1. Application: To apply to Change It 2008 you must complete the official application page located at the program's website, www.changeit08.org (the "Change It Site"). Through on-screen instructions you will be asked to provide your first and last name, mailing address, date of birth, email address and answer a series of essay questions. The answers should be no longer than 100 words per question. Each answer must be directly responsive to the essay question asked. If in the opinion of the judges, the answer is not responsive, the answer will be disregarded and the entry will be subject to disqualification. Entrants who submit misrepresented or fraudulent responses will be disqualified. Follow the instructions online to submit your contest application.

Automated or robotic entries submitted by individuals or organizations will be disqualified. You may apply for Change It 2008 only once. Additional entries will be disregarded. All public profile fields on the application will be made public through the Change It Site. All entries are the property of Sponsors and will not be returned.

2. Eligibility: Only legal residents of the fifty United States (excluding Puerto Rico, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands), the District of Columbia and Canada, who will be between 18 and 24 years of age on July 16, 2008, and who will be enrolled as full- or part-time undergraduate college students in the fall of 2008 are eligible. Students who attended Change It in 2006 or 2007 are only eligible to apply to participate in Change It in 2008 as one of 24 advanced student trainers. Employees and employees' immediate family (defined as spouse, mother, father, in-laws, grandmother, grandfather, brother, sister, children and grandchildren or household members) of Sponsors, and their parents, affiliates, subsidiaries, program vendors, printers, distributors, advertising and promotional agencies are not eligible to participate in the program.

3. Privacy: By applying to participate in Change It, you agree to Sponsors' use of your personal information as described in the privacy statement at http://www.seventhgeneration.com/privacy. As noted above, all public fields of the online application you submit will be made public through the Change It Site.

4. Selection: There will be 140 Participant spots created for and promoted by this program. 70 participant spots will be in Boston and 70 in Seattle. The 140 Participants will be selected by a judging mechanism administrated by Greenpeace. In selecting Participants, Greenpeace will adhere to the following selection criteria, which were developed jointly by the Sponsors:

  • Leadership experience or skills
  • Concern about the environment ahead of other issues
  • Inspiring rather than judgmental attitude
  • Strategic thinking
  • Commitment to working on environmental and/or social equity projects after Program
  • Diversity

Students who do not meet the following criteria will be eliminated:

  • Demonstrated leadership experience or skills
  • Commitment to working to protect the environment and social equity
  • Track record of involvement in environmental or social efforts

Students who qualify based on the above criteria will be selected based equally on:

  • How inspiring the person is
  • Leadership skills
  • Strategic thinking

Within these 140 Participants there will be 24 student trainer spots designated as support to the program and requiring additional training in advance of the week-long program. 2006 and 2007 Change It Alumni may apply for the 2008 program, but may only attend if selected as a student trainer. Alumni who meet the same selection criteria as Participants will be given first preference for interviews to become a student trainer. In addition to meeting the selection criteria described above in their online applications, selection of student trainers will be based on a phone interview with a Greenpeace staff member, using selection standards predetermined by the Sponsors.

Applicants who are invited to Change It will be notified by email or mail. Invited applicants must confirm their commitment to attend Change It 2008 within five (5) business days of notification. Any notification not responded to or returned as undeliverable may result in forfeiture of the invitation to attend Change It and an alternate applicant shall be selected. Confirmed applicants shall be required to sign and return a W-9, commitment letter and release of liability within fourteen (14) days of notification. In the event of non-compliance within this time period, the invitation will be forfeited and an alternate applicant will be selected for the spot. No substitution or transfer of a program invitation is permitted. The FULL names of confirmed applicants will be posted on the Change It 2008 Site.

5. Participants: One hundred and forty (140) applicants will be offered an expense paid trip to Change It 2008, a grassroots educational training program in partnership with Greenpeace, which consists in part of a trip to Boston or Seattle for six (6) days and five (5) nights, and accommodations at a university campus at no expense to the participant. Travel from locations within a 300 mile radius will likely be by bus or rail.

Travel, food and lodging will be covered by Sponsors (approximate retail value will range from $500 to $1,500 depending on the distance traveled). A 1099 form will be provided to all participants whose program value exceeds $600. All additional expenses associated with the Program including but not limited to federal, state and local sales or other taxes and surcharges and incidentals are the responsibility of the student.

TOTAL APPROXIMATE RETAIL VALUE OF PROGRAM: $100,000.00 - $300,000

6. General Conditions: The Program is governed by the laws of the United States. All federal, state and local laws and regulations apply. Failure to comply with the Official Rules will result in disqualification and forfeiture of the invitation to participate in Change It 2008. If the invitation to participate is forfeited, an alternate participant will be invited from eligible entries. Except where prohibited by law, the applicant grants (and agrees to confirm that grant in writing) permission for Sponsors, its advertising and promotional agencies, and those acting under its authority to use such participant's name, photograph, voice and/or likeness, and winning entry (including the display, reproduction and distribution of the entry), for advertising and/or publicity purposes in all media and formats now known or hereafter discovered, worldwide and on the world wide web, without notice, review, approval, or additional compensation. Applicants further agree that Sponsors and all affiliated companies, successors and assigns, advertising and promotion agencies, suppliers, web hosting companies, printers, distributors, and the respective officers, directors, employees, representatives and agents of each and any other person or entity related in any way to this program (together the "Program Entities") will have no liability whatsoever for, and shall be held harmless by entrants against, any and all liability for any injuries, loss or damage of any kind to persons, including death, or property damage resulting in whole or in part, directly or indirectly, from acceptance, possession, misuse or use of participation in this program, or while traveling to, preparing for or participating in any Change It-related activity. The Program Entities expressly disclaim any responsibility or liability for injury or loss to any person or property in connection with the delivery and/or subsequent use of the Change It program. Restrictions, conditions, and limitations apply. Applicants each warrant and represent that the entry is an original work written by the entrant and that the entrant has all rights and power to grant the rights under these Official Rules.

7. Conduct: The Official Rules will be posted at the Change It Site throughout the program. Applicants further agree to be bound by the decisions of the judges, which are final and binding in all respects. Sponsors reserve the right at their sole discretion to disqualify any individual found to be tampering with the application process or the operation of any of the program or application process or any website; to be acting in violation of the Official Rules; or to be acting in an unsportsmanlike or disruptive manner, or with intent to annoy, abuse, threaten or harass any other person. Additionally, it is at the discretion of the Sponsors to omit obscene or inappropriate entries to the public fields the "How will you Change It?" submissions. CAUTION: ANY DELIBERATE ATTEMPT BY AN APPLICANT OR ANY OTHER INDIVIDUAL TO DAMAGE ANY WEBSITE OR UNDERMINE THE LEGITIMATE OPERATION OF THE PROGRAM IS A VIOLATION OF CRIMINAL AND CIVIL LAWS AND SHOULD SUCH AN ATTEMPT BE MADE, SPONSORS RESERVES THE RIGHT TO SEEK DAMAGES FROM ANY SUCH PERSON TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW.

8. Limitations of Liability: Sponsors are not responsible for any incorrect or inaccurate information, whether caused by website users or by any of the equipment or programming associated with or utilized in the Change It application process or by any technical or human error, which may occur in the processing of submissions in the program. Sponsors assume no responsibility for any misdirected or lost mail, or any error, omission, interruption, deletion, defect, delay in operation or transmission, communications line failure, theft or destruction or unauthorized access to, or alteration of, applications. Sponsors are not responsible for any problems or technical malfunction of any telephone network or lines, computer on-line systems, servers or providers, computer equipment, software, failure of email or players on account of technical problems or traffic congestion on the Internet or at any website or combination thereof, including injury or damage to entrants or to any other person's computer related to or resulting from participating or downloading materials in the program. If, for any reason, the Change It Site is not capable of running as planned, including infection by computer virus, bugs, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failures, or any other causes beyond the control of Sponsors which corrupt or affect the administration, security, fairness, integrity or proper conduct of the Change It Site, then Sponsors reserve the right at their sole discretion to cancel, terminate, modify or suspend the Change It Site.

9. Amendments: Sponsors reserve the right to suspend, cancel, terminate or modify the Change It 2008 program and the Official Rules without advance notice, and thereafter to re-commence the program, if at all, only at such time(s) and upon such terms and conditions as Sponsors shall deem reasonable under the circumstances.

10. Severability: If any one or more provisions of these Official Rules are held to be invalid, illegal or unenforceable by a court of competent jurisdiction, such invalidity, illegality or unenforceability shall not affect the validity, effect or enforcement of any other provision or provisions of these Official Rules.
